Toyota is preparing to unveil a new city car – a next-generation Aygo – and our spy photographers have snapped the third-generation model, which will be winter tested ahead of its 2022 debut.
Toyota recently indicated that it will buck the industry trend by staying in the city car class with the Toyota Aygo X Prologue – a concept that previewed the new model.
The new concept shows how Toyota believes its A-segment model can become a crossover while maintaining its small dimensions and being a conventional gasoline-powered vehicle at a lower price point than baby electric vehicles. The Aygo X prologue is a little longer and higher than the current Aygo at 3,700 mm and 1,500 mm respectively. Its wheelbase is also extended by a useful 90 mm to 2,340 mm, which may create additional space in the cabin.
The overall feel is funky and slightly more aggressive than the current Aygo – a reflection of the design team’s impression that the trend in the city car market has been to make designs too “cute”. “We used the word ‘spice’ during development,” said Ian Cartabiano, director of the ED2 design facility in France, where the concept was created.
“Bringing that attitude into an A-segment car is really cool. When you see this car you smile; you could grin. “
Toyota has not officially confirmed that the X-Prologue is a preview of a production model. But the company recently announced that it is working on a new generation of city cars and that it will be based on the same TNGA GA-B platform as the Yaris. The company says the Aygo X prologue shows “a new vision for the A segment” and Cartabiano says it is actually based on the GA-B architecture. He also confirmed to Auto Express that while no pictures of the cabin have been released, the interior of the concept has already been designed.
So it’s likely that the Aygo X Prologue is a pretty close preview of the production model – although some elements, like the wide wheel arches and especially the 19-inch wheels (a full four inches larger than the current car), may be for the final Mode can be weakened a little.
The profile, meanwhile, is dominated by the contrasting color and encircles the base of the rear doors in a movement that shows the manufacturing processes and the places where metal doors are surrounded by plastic bumpers. The roof rails that align with the top of the taillights help emphasize the height of the vehicle while adding another subtle SUV reference.
Some older Aygo parts and panels are taken over for the finished car based on our spy footage. The rear bumper and taillights of our spy mule are identical to those of the current car, which should help keep development costs to a minimum and help Toyota get the most profit.
The biggest difference existing Aygo owners should notice could be the X-Prologue’s “H spot” – the height of the hips of the passengers in the seats. It’s taller than the current car – roughly equivalent to its position in Toyota’s upcoming Yaris Cross small SUV.
Cartabiano says this brings a number of benefits. “The higher hip point makes it easier to get in and out,” he says. “It improves visibility, so it’s great for parking in urban areas and when driving on country roads. It is also better to load items in the tailgate, as raising the floor for arm’s length is more natural. “
The raised floor can be seen in the latest spy footage – prototype versions of the new Aygo appear to drive higher than the current model, confirming the SUV-inspired makeover.
Despite some reliance on the current Aygo parts bin for its exterior, relocating the new car to Toyota’s latest GA-B platform could bring with it an entirely new interior. Expect the Yaris switchgear to pop up above the new looking cabin, swapping out the old car’s simple center stack for a neater center console with a floating touchscreen system.
The next Aygo will be built in Kolin, Czech Republic – the same plant that produced the existing model alongside its sister vehicles Peugeot 108 and Citroen C1. The French tenders are going out of production and Toyota has taken full control of the factory, investing more than £ 130 million to prepare it for the GA-B platform. This work is expected to take several months, so we should expect the next Aygo in the first half of 2022 at the earliest.
The new model will likely focus on affordability, so it will almost certainly be offered with a traditional three-cylinder gasoline engine, as well as possibly a version of Toyota’s smallest hybrid powertrain. This should help keep the price roughly the same as the existing Aygo, starting at around £ 13,500.
